More Opening Day Opportunities?
by Larry Trusley (Sep 4, 2008)
Last week the bowl hangover theory I mentioned went 3-1 against the number so with the NFL opening this weekend I will try and stay on a roll by giving you some opening day opportunities to think about.
Football Is Finally Here
by Larry Trusley (Aug 28, 2008)
Although I have had a successful baseball season so far I am more than ready for some football. Maybe its because my futures ticket on the Oakland A’s is history and the ones I own on the White Sox and Diamondbacks don’t look much better.
There Are Just A Few Reasons To Bet On NFL Preseason Games
by Larry Trusley (Aug 21, 2008)
This weekend marks the third week of this year’s NFL preseason and I am sure most pundits can’t wait until the REAL season begins on September 4th. The underdogs are cleaning up so far going 22-8 (73%) which is good news for a guy like me who tends to lean towards that side more often than not.
In Sports Handicapping You Are Never Too Old To Learn A New Trick
by Larry Trusley (Aug 14, 2008)
If you been reading this space for more than a year or two you know by now that I head to Las Vegas every early May to shop and get down on my Major League futures. As a rule I only bet teams to win the pennant but this year I also got down on the Diamondbacks to win the World Series.
BoDog Seizure May Be Just The Beginning?
by Larry Trusley (Aug 8, 2008)
The United States government recently seized $24 million from bank accounts linked to offshore bookmaking giant BoDog. The seizures took place from such well-known institutions as Wachovia, Bank of America, SunTrust Banks and Regions Bank.
Kobe & Company Are –357 To Bring Home The Gold
by Larry Trusley (Aug 1, 2008)
While checking for this week’s boxing odds at Pinnacle Sports I came across the wagering menu for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Yes, you can bet on everything including basketball, baseball, archery and even table tennis and badminton.
When You Are In A Sports Book The House Rules
by Larry Trusley (Jul 24, 2008)
I just now caught the completion of the game which was eventually won by the Blue Jays 5-1. Now the question arises which side cashes their ticket?
NFL Wagering Popularity Keeps Growing
by Larry Trusley (Jul 16, 2008)
We are seven weeks away from opening night of the 2008-2009 NFL season and Las Vegas is already posting game one odds for all but one contest.
If You Can't Resist Betting On The All Star Game......
by Larry Trusley (Jul 10, 2008)
Next Tuesday is the 79th edition of Major League Baseball's All Star Game and it will be the last time it will be played in the house that Ruth built. Since 1996 the American League has gone 10-0-1 but overall the National League holds a 40-36-2 lead in victories.
Snake-Bitten Wiz Has Buyer’s Remorse......
by Larry Trusley (Jul 2, 2008)
We have reached the halfway point of the 2008 Major League Baseball season and I must admit I am almost ready to concede the National League flag to any team other than the team I bet on sixty days ago. I can’t remember any team I have wagered on falling so far or so quickly as MY Diamondbacks have since I pegged them at 5 to 1 on April 30th.
Pondering A Six Pack Of Overs And Unders In NFL Regular Season Wins......
by Larry Trusley (Jun 27, 2008)
On my trip to Las Vegas last week I did some window-shopping on NFL regular season wins for the upcoming season. Before I left for the desert I chose two teams that I felt were on the way up and four that were on the way down.
Reinvesting Part Of The Celtic Portfolio......
by Larry Trusley (Jun 20, 2008)
Just returned from beautiful Las Vegas where the temperatures during my visit hovered just below the 110 degree mark. The only thing more enjoyable then their weather is the traffic congestion.
The Action Starts Saturday At The “Blatt”
by Larry Trusley (Jun 12, 2008)
In Omaha on Saturday at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium eight of the country’s best Division one baseball teams will play in a tournament called the College World Series. The “Blatt” as it is affectionately called by locals is named after former Omaha mayor Johnny Rosenblatt who pushed for it’s construction in 1948 and two years later attracted the NCAA College World Series.
Can Dutrow Survive A Bad Case of Hoof and Mouth Disease?
by Larry Trusley (Jun 5, 2008)
Rick Dutrow Jr. the trainer of Triple Crown hopeful Big Brown has been guaranteeing a win despite his horse having a cracked hoof and only one “live” drill since he ran away with The Preakness Stakes in Baltimore three weeks ago.
They Have Played Two Months And The Standings Are Upside Down?
by Larry Trusley (May 30, 2008)
Well maybe nobody in the White Sox’s, Ray’s or Marlin’s clubhouses would agree with this week’s title but I am sure if you asked the Las Vegas oddsmakers they would agree that this a season for the ages.
Sir Charles Isn’t The Only One Unhappy With Vegas......
by Larry Trusley (May 22, 2008)
I spent the last week wondering if Steve Wynn has been added to Charles Barkley’s Fav Five T Mobile Account? I guess not according to Mr Barkley’s statement to the media that his failure to cover $400,000 in markers at Mr Wynn’s Las Vegas casino was “an oversight”.
Why Don’t They Just UPS The Preakness Results In?
by Larry Trusley (May 16, 2008)
A couple of days before the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby I mentioned to my wife that I thought UPS was missing a golden (brown) marketing opportunity by not signing some sort of advertising deal with the connections of the Derby favorite Big Brown. Several days after his easy victory an article appeared in the Orange County Register announcing just that.
No Mas To The Mets......
by Larry Trusley (May 9, 2008)
Last year in this space I tabbed the New York Mets as my pick to win the 2007 National League pennant at 3 ½ to 1 odds. My number one rule when betting the futures is to NEVER take less than 5 to 1 odds. Well I got my just deserved reward for breaking that rule when the Mets collapsed in September and I had all my friends teasing me about being on the choking dogs of September.
Does Anyone Else See Z Humor In Betting Z Fortune?
by Larry Trusley (May 1, 2008)
I know of at least one such person….my wife Sandy who has Z Fortune picked behind only Big Brown and Bob Blackjack for Saturday’s 134th edition of the Kentucky Derby. Before you scoff at her selections I should tell you that had I listened to her back in 2005 and included Closing Argument on my exacta and trifecta tickets I would be $9,814.80 ($2 Exacta Payout) + $133,134.80 ($2 Trifecta Payout) richer.
Just Like Real Estate Derby Is A Beyer’s Market......
by Larry Trusley (Apr 24, 2008)
Andrew Beyer has been the horse-racing columnist for the Washington Post since 1978 and is considered one of the foremost experts in thoroughbred wagering in the country. Although he did not invent the concept of speed figures when he began publishing his back in 1991 little did we know that they would become such a popular handicapping tool that appears in the Daily Racing Form across America. Since I believe most readers of this space are more interested in sports betting than thoroughbreds I will take the time to briefly define what A Beyer Speed Figure is.
Finally The REAL NBA Season Begins......
by Larry Trusley (Apr 18, 2008)
I can only speak for me but I had a lot more fun watching the three weeks of March Madness than I did following the last six months of meaningless round ball games played by spoiled millionaires.
Patience Can Be A Virtue and It Might Make You Some Money Too......
by Larry Trusley (Apr 11, 2008)
Today people are sitting in airports all across America having their patience severely tested. I feel blessed having “escaped” from Maui On United Airlines flight 44 this past Wednesday afternoon. Before the American Airlines fiasco news reports on the island were reporting that there were 11,000 Aloha and ATA passengers stranded in paradise. I hate to guess what that number is today. I have to admit my heart skipped a beat when my plane was delayed an hour.
Sports Handicapping Heaven?
by Larry Trusley (Apr 4, 2008)
While waiting for my 7 to 1 Tar Heels to try and advance on Saturday I thought it might be a good idea to take a couple of days off from the big screen Toshiba triplets so the wife and I have headed to Maui for a little R&R.
Sweet 16 and Elite 8 Wagering......
by Larry Trusley (Mar 26, 2008)
Every year the media and the public take whacks at the NCAA March Madness selection committee but in my eyes they do more than a credible job.
Wade, Don’t Dive Into The Madness......
by Larry Trusley (Mar 20, 2008)
As I begin this week’s newsletter all three big screen Toshibas are consumed with round ball action from all over the country. Three-hundred miles or so east of here the Las Vegas sportsbooks are packed with people betting on everything that moves.
Cinderella Is Rarely Around For The Last Dance......
by Larry Trusley (Mar 14, 2008)
Since 1949 (Yes I have been around that long) the eventual NCAA men’s basketball champion has usually been ranked near the top in the Associated Press Top 25 Basketball Poll.
Lakers and Celtics Are The Favorites......
by Larry Trusley (Mar 6, 2008)
If the playoffs started today the Spurs and the Celtics would be the number one seeds in their respective conferences but the Lakers and Celtics are the 5/2 favorites to win the 2007/2008 NBA Championship.
I Am Still Following The Dual Qualifiers......
by Larry Trusley (Feb 28, 2008)
We are still nine weeks away from the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby and like many an old horse player I believe this game to be on it’s way out. The industry as a whole can’t get along and the latest fiasco involves synthetic racing surfaces that have been mandated here in California.
No Country For Old Men......
by Larry Trusley (Feb 21, 2008)
These words came to life this past week in a phone conversation with my webmaster when he mentioned that he thought I was seventy years old... OUCH!!!
Phone Betting Is Phone Betting Isn’t It?
by Larry Trusley (Feb 13, 2008)
With the Super Bowl betting frenzy behind us and March Madness still a few weeks away I thought I would use this week’s newsletter to address one of my pet peeves in life: The refusal of our government to legalize sports betting in America
Don’t Even Feel A Little Bit Sorry For Las Vegas.....
by Larry Trusley (Feb 7, 2008)
For the second consecutive year the 174 sports books in Nevada handled less money on the Super Bowl than they did the year before. The total amount bet was $92.1 million, well under the predicted $100 million plus many gaming officials had predicted. The books lost a record $2.6 million on the Super Bowl because the New York Giants upset the heavily favored Patriots.
Does Playing The Super Bowl Indoors Make A Difference?
by Larry Trusley (Jan 31, 2008)
Sunday will mark the thirteenth time that the NFL has chosen an indoor venue to stage it’s championship game since naming it the Super Bowl. It is my belief that a windless indoor stadium is ideal for passing situations and Sunday’s game should be fun to watch. When looking for a wagering angle I prefer not to hazard a guess as to which team playing the game indoors helps the most.
What Are We Waiting For?
by Larry Trusley (Jan 25, 2008)
XLII is STILL over a week away thanks to NFL officials who can hear the cash registers ringing up the millions of dollars being spent on their league-licensed merchandise. If the NFL isn’t a monopoly then what is?
Home Team Favorites This Weekend?
by Larry Trusley (Jan 17, 2008)
Last week’s newsletter pointed out that in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs underdogs are worth a look and a money maker over the last five years. Well they came through yet again going 2-2 versus the money line netting $555 if you wagered $100 on each of the dogs.
Favorites Laying Heavy Wood This Weekend......
by Larry Trusley (Jan 10, 2008)
We are just a little over twenty-four hours away from the beginning of the Divisional round of the 2007/2008 playoffs and the giant lines don’t seem to be deterring the public from wagering on the heavy favorites.
PRESS ON!!! Nothing Can Beat Persistence!!!!!!
by Larry Trusley (Jan 3, 2008)
As I sit down to write the first “A Bettor Approach” of 2008 I can’t help but look back on the year 2007 and say that I am more than happy that it’s over.
Cousin Vinny Is Always A Welcome After Christmas Visitor......
by Larry Trusley (Dec 27, 2007)
When I got up early this morning a message from my cousin Vinny was waiting for me on my fax machine. Well sort of!!! Around this time of the year for as many years as I can remember the “Bowl Pool” spreadsheet has arrived via the fax machine in my home office.
Ten Bowl Dogs Worth A Play......
by Larry Trusley (Dec 20, 2007)
While everyone is out scrambling to find a parking space at the local mall I prefer to curl up with my college bowl folder and crunch the numbers for the thirty-two games that will be played over the next two and a half weeks. This week I will share with you one approach that I take towards the bowl season.
Tiz The Season For Interim Coaches......Does It Matter?
by Larry Trusley (Dec 13, 2007)
This week’s resignation of former Atlanta Falcons head coach Joe Petrino has caused a big uproar in the national media. They have portrayed him as a “quitter” and as a “money-grabbing self-centered” etc etc etc. Why not place some of the blame on the Arkansas nation?
Heisman Betting Favors Tebow......
by Larry Trusley (Dec 6, 2007)
This Saturday night the 2007 Heisman Trophy will be awarded in New York City and the internet bettors have bet Florida quarterback Tim Tebow down to the 1 to 5 odds on favorite.
Smoked, Shellacked And Shingled In The Desert......
by Larry Trusley (Nov 29, 2007)
A week ago today (Thursday) I sat down for Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends at The Golden Nugget buffet. I felt a sharp pain in my right rib cage area and little did I know that was just the beginning of a very painful weekend. Now I have always enjoyed traveling to this desert city but I must tell you I have no intention of ever spending another holiday there. It’s a very depressing sight watching people throw their hard earned money into slot machines instead of spending time at home with family.
Pats Are Turning NFL Season Into A Real Turkey......
by Larry Trusley (Nov 21, 2007)
I am in Primm, Nevada cashing in my Red Sox bonds from last May on my way to Las Vegas for round two of Leroy’s Money Talks Tourney. My opponent is Andy Iskoe who writes a column for Gaming Today which is the periodical you can pick up in any sports book in Nevada. I have been told through a mutual friend that Andy is a good guy so I am looking forward to meeting him.
Who Do You Like In “THE” Game?
by Larry Trusley (Nov 16, 2007)
As I head out of Union Station in our nation’s capital on a rainy Thursday morning on Amtrak train #86. It’s time to write this week’s newsletter and what better subject then what the Ivy Leaguers call The Game: Harvard versus Yale.
What Is The BCS Championship Game Going To “O” fer?
by Larry Trusley (Nov 9, 2007)
We are exactly two months away from the end of the college football season and the BCS Championship game in New Orleans. The final BCS poll will be released on December 2nd and it won’t be until then that we know the two teams who are going to face off for the national championship.
Where Is Kobe Going?
by Larry Trusley (Nov 1, 2007)
Well the long major league baseball season is behind us and college hoops are right around the corner so that leaves us with just the NBA to stimulate our wagering juices during the week. Out here in Southern California the airwaves and newspapers are inundated with the “Kobe watch”.
Pass The P’s Please......
by Larry Trusley (Oct 25, 2007)
Although Thanksgiving is still about one month off I thought “Pass The P’s Please” was a fitting title to this week’s “A Bettor Approach”. Despite the fires here in Southern California I am planning to fulfill a commitment that I made sometime ago to attend Breeders Cup Day at the off track-betting site adjacent to Del Mar Turf Club.
Can You Eat 60 Boiled Eggs In Eight Minutes?
by Larry Trusley (Oct 19, 2007)
On Friday nights on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas they pull a handful of contestants out of the crowd for this glorious event. It is a sight to behold but only if you have a strong stomach because not every participant’s digestive tract is able to keep up with the torrid pace and thus the eggs only have one place to go.
$160K……Winner…….Take All
by Larry Trusley (Oct 10, 2007)
As I appear to make my first appearance in Leroy’s Las Vegas “Money Talks” Invitational on Friday I must admit I feel a little bit like Appalachian State headed to the Big House to face the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I am paired against Michigan native Dave Hochman and here is how the contest works.
A Six Pack Of MLB Playoff Stats......
by Larry Trusley (Oct 3, 2007)
This time of the year is one of my favorites with football heating up and baseball finally playing meaningful games. I thought I would share with you six of the many numbers I look at when evaluating my postseason wagers.
Familiar Faces In Familiar Places......
by Larry Trusley (Sep 28, 2007)
As I began work on my NFL 2007 three game chart this week two columns of numbers jumped out at me “Previous Super Bowls” and “Super Bowl Wins”.
In Game Wagering......
by Larry Trusley (Sep 20, 2007)
Every year in the week (s) leading up to the Super Bowl the Nevada casinos and online establishments start posting proposition bets that entice the public to wager on things that defy reason. During last week’s shopping rounds I picked up an “In Game Wagering” sheet at Harrahs on the strip. The sheet covered the Ravens-Bengals Monday night game.
Hoping The Party At Primm Isn’t Over......
by Larry Trusley (Sep 13, 2007)
Just got back from Vegas and once again I placed my BCS/Super Bowl futures wagers in Primm, Nevada. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the party may soon be over because they were in the process of changing all their signs to say Terribles. It is my understanding that old man Primm has sold the whole shooting match and purchased a big yacht somewhere here in Southern California. For those of you readers who live elsewhere in the country it is probably safe to say you have no idea where Primm, Nevada is nor will you be visiting there anytime soon.
Let’s Watch One……That’s Our Privelege
by Larry Trusley (Sep 7, 2007)
I have delayed my fall shopping trip to Vegas for one week in an effort to end my drought of not picking winning future Super Bowl bets. I am also trying to take advantage of the fact that 32 of the last 40 (80%) teams making the Super Bowl won their first game.
Early Season College Football Handicapping......
by Larry Trusley (Aug 30, 2007)
As I begin writing this week’s newsletter we are only hours away from the beginning of the 2007/2008 college football season. My phone has been busy with questions from clients and prospective clients many asking the same questions.
Offense Counts Too
by Larry Trusley (Aug 23, 2007)
Take A Good Look At The Top Five D’s......
by Larry Trusley (Aug 16, 2007)
It’s that time of year when I start thinking about heading to Vegas for my early fall window- shopping trip. Usually by the time I head east through the desert I have a pretty good idea about which teams I am most interested in and in this week’s newsletter I thought I would share one of my thought processes regarding one of my favorite wagers of the year.
How Do You Spell Relief ?
by Larry Trusley (Aug 10, 2007)
I am not sure how many of you are old enough to remember the old Rolaids commercials that began with that question. This product promised to deliver quick relief for the uncomfortable symptoms of acid indigestion.
Do Preseason Games Count?
by Larry Trusley (Aug 2, 2007)
They do if you bet on them. Sunday’s Hall of Fame game between the Saints and the Steelers in Canton, Ohio marks the beginning of six months of pro football betting opportunities.
Let’s Talk About Something Positive
by Larry Trusley (Jul 26, 2007)
My first intuition for this week’s newsletter was to discuss the NBA referee betting scandal but I am sure most of you are just as sick of hearing about it as I am.
It’s That Time Of Year Again......
by Larry Trusley (Jul 20, 2007)
This time every year all the preseason magazines start publishing their top twenty college teams and obviously I am looking at these teams as well as their odds to win the BCS 2008 game looking for wagering value.
Being A Winner Can Be Taxing......
by Larry Trusley (Jul 12, 2007)
Well this week I have watched the Homerun Derby twice and Kenny Mayne’s great catch in the celebrity game three times and quite honestly I am bored stupid. It could be worse though because I am old enough to remember when there were TWO All Star games every summer.
SO FAR SO GOOD ?
by Larry Trusley (Jul 5, 2007)
The 4th of July or the All-Star break is usually considered the halfway point of the Major League baseball season. A time of year when I am back inside my futures folder updating the numbers on all thirty teams but more importantly checking the status on the wagers I made on Kentucky Derby weekend in Las Vegas.
The Wiz Kid......
by Larry Trusley (Jun 28, 2007)
Betting NFL Regular Season Wins Overs And Unders Can Be Fun......
by Larry Trusley (Jun 22, 2007)
It’s hard to believe that in a little over six weeks the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio will launch another NFL season and for those of us who partake in wagering on these contests it’s never to early to start analyzing which teams have improved and which ones have regressed.
Wiz of Id Rooting for ANTEATERS in Omaha......
by Larry Trusley (Jun 14, 2007)
Controversial comic strip creator Johnny Hart, 76, whose comic strips “BC” and “Wizard of Id” used wisecracking cave men and henpecked sorcerers to comment on modern life passed away at his drawing board this past April. Had Johnny lived he no doubt would have been rooting for the UCI Anteaters to win this year’s 2007 College World Series.
Has Women’s Lib Gone Too Far?
by Larry Trusley (Jun 8, 2007)
As I sit down to write this week’s newsletter the airwaves are filled with the release from jail of Paris Hilton. Does this action give new meaning to the Women’s Liberation Movement?
It’s Only Memorial Day And The Baseball Season May Already Be Over......
by Larry Trusley (May 31, 2007)
This past Tuesday I updated my Major League Baseball stats which has been my practice for the last forty plus years and if my numbers serve me correctly there’s not much suspense left in the 2007 season.
Are We Gambling Too Much?
by Larry Trusley (May 24, 2007)
Last week a family matter took me to a sleepy village named Trinidad which is approximately twenty miles north of Eureka, California. There isn’t much to do there but to my astonishment they DO have a casino. On Tuesday morning I drove down a tree lined winding road to arrive at Trinidad’s answer to Las Vegas.
Does It Make Any SENSE To Bet The Preakness?
by Larry Trusley (May 18, 2007)
Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense is almost a lock to go off as the solid favorite in this Saturday’s 132nd running of the Preakness Stakes. If you are more than a casual bettor the question then comes up “Is this race really worth betting?” At first glance the answer is “no”.
Selig Should Abort These Late Launches......
by Larry Trusley (May 10, 2007)
I spent the end of last week window-shopping in Vegas for my baseball pennant futures and I must admit The Rocket signing with the Yankees came as a surprise to me. I had several well-placed sources tell me he was close to signing with the Red Sox.
Does Post Position Matter On Saturday?
by Larry Trusley (May 2, 2007)
As I begin writing this week’s newsletter we are a little over an hour away from ESPN’s live telecast of the post-position draw for the 133rd Kentucky Derby. Is it really that important or is it just another time filler for the 24 hour sports channel?
Would Have......Could Have......Should Have
by Larry Trusley (Apr 26, 2007)
With the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby a little over a week away I have spent the last couple of days reminiscing about my first few years here in California. In the early seventies I was an every day visitor at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and I even remember standing in the long lines down at Del Mar before it’s modernization. Those were the good old days.
NBA Championship: ??? vs ???
by Larry Trusley (Apr 19, 2007)
We will have to wait until June to find out who is going to play for the NBA Championship trophy but you can bet Commissioner Stern is secretly rooting for the Dallas Mavericks to stumble somewhere along the way. Dallas owner Mark Cuban on the other hand can’t wait to accept the Larry O’Brien Trophy from his best buddy AKA The Comish.
Who Gives A Puck?
by Larry Trusley (Apr 13, 2007)
The Stanley Cup playoffs began this week and several of you have emailed asking me if I make selections on the NHL. The answer is no. It is pretty difficult for me to get excited about a sport that has its playoffs televised on a network called Versus.
Yes I Know The Gators Are REPEATERS......
by Larry Trusley (Apr 6, 2007)
Several of you emailed this week taking a shot at me for dismissing the Florida Gators at the beginning of March Madness simply because they won the tournament last year. You questioned how I could do that when they were clearly the best team. Well to tell you the truth it was easy.
Nobody Likes The Luckeyes Which Might Be Good News For Me......
by Larry Trusley (Mar 29, 2007)
After spending the past week listening to the media pick everyone of the Final Four teams EXCEPT Ohio State to win the whole thing I have come to the conclusion that I am sitting pretty. I am holding a nice ticket on the Bucks at 8 to 1 that I purchased in the desert last November and I also have the Georgetown Hoyas still alive at 6 ½ to 1 as the only team left standing from my four pre-tourney selections. (See A Different Approach in Newsletter Archives).
Can A MM Dominated By Favorites Be Won By A Big Underdog?
by Larry Trusley (Mar 21, 2007)
The opening day of this year’s NCAA tourney was borderline scary for the sports books in Las Vegas. The first eight games were won by favorites both straight up and versus the number and as I have told you often in this space the novice bettors in this world tend to bet the favorite without even thinking about the number.
A Different Approach......
by Larry Trusley (Mar 14, 2007)
Thursday 16 games, Friday 16 games, Saturday 8 games and Sunday 8 more!! A sports bettor’s dream or perhaps a sports bettor’s nightmare? If you try and bet on every game I can almost guarantee you will have a long and losing weekend.
Don’t Hurry To Lay Big Numbers Early On In The Madness......
by Larry Trusley (Mar 9, 2007)
Come Sunday night and again around the water cooler on Monday morning everyone will be chatting about filling out their brackets for the opening rounds of this year’s dance. Picking straight up winners is pretty simple but A Bettor Approach is about beating the spread which is a whole different story.
Nine Nags To Watch The Next Nine Weeks......
by Larry Trusley (Mar 1, 2007)
Nine weeks from this Saturday the television networks will once again begin bombarding us with those awful pictures of last year’s Derby winner Barbaro being injured in the Preakness Stakes. I can’t for the like of me figure out why they have to keep showing us that catastrophic injury.
More Oscar Babel......
by Larry Trusley (Feb 22, 2007)
I really am not very fond of this time of year because football is long gone and we are still weeks away from March Madness and opening day of the baseball season. I just can’t get real excited about watching the NFL combine on my satellite dish either. So after taking a one-year hiatus I am back picking the Oscars.
I Am Betting Against The West and Sir Charles...... But Just This Weekend
by Larry Trusley (Feb 15, 2007)
This weekend marks the first time a major professional sports league is allowing it’s All Star game to be played in of all places Las Vegas, Nevada. Which hotel do you suppose is putting David Stern up? Do you really believe he will pay for a meal while he is in town? Do you think he has his choice of show tickets on the strip?
I Hate To Say I Told You So......BUT
by Larry Trusley (Feb 8, 2007)
No not that the Colts and Peyton Manning were going to beat T-Rex (T as in Terrible) and his Bears in the Super Bowl and that they would cover the 7 point spread with ease. I have been reminded all week that I picked Chicago to cover and that I even said the Bears had a very good chance to win outright. I have been right about one thing in this space though.
Don’t Let Prop Bets Ruin Your Day......
by Larry Trusley (Feb 1, 2007)
It’s no secret that Super Bowl betting no longer consists of just picking a side and total anymore. In fact Super Bowl I did not even have a total posted. Quite a contrast when today both Las Vegas and offshore sports books are posting hundreds of proposition wagers on the big game. Just ask Janet Gretzky (The Great One’s Wife) who reportedly bet thousands on the coin toss in Super Bowl XXXX.
This Year’s Super Bowl Numbers......
by Larry Trusley (Jan 28, 2007)
A week from Sunday CBS will broadcast Super Bowl XLI to an audience of about 90 million viewers. A crummy seat will cost you around $3,000 and if you want to advertise be prepared to spend around $2.6 million for a thirty second ad. Impressive numbers indeed but not the ones most of those viewers will be really interested in.
The Jury Is Out On The Wiz......and It Doesn’t Look Good
by Larry Trusley (Jan 19, 2007)
This week’s A Bettor Approach comes to you from the courthouse in beautiful downtown Santa Ana where I have been invited to the civic drill called jury duty. I believe this is fitting punishment for last week’s NFL selections.
Divisional Round…..Advantage Home Team
by Larry Trusley (Jan 11, 2007)
The history of this round favors the home team for several reasons. First off the four home teams represent the best teams during the regular season and secondly they have had two weeks to rest and improve their injury situation. History shows that the Super Bowl teams usually come from this group of first round bye teams.
Day Dreaming About A Super Bowl I-Super Bowl XLI Weekend......
by Larry Trusley (Jan 5, 2007)
As we head into Wild Card weekend and look forward to Monday night’s showdown in Glendale Arizona I am sure that I am not the only sports bettor wondering why the NCAA fun has to end here. What if Monday’s winner of the Ohio State-Florida matchup played Boise State on Saturday January 20th in one of two semifinal contests played that afternoon at a warm weather neutral site.
Trying To Up Your New Year’s Day Bowling Average......
by Larry Trusley (Dec 28, 2006)
By the time New Years Day morning rolls around the 2006/2007 college bowl season will already be twenty-one games old. If you are lucky or good enough to be up a few bucks when the “early” games kick off Monday morning then you need to avoid going crazy on these half dozen games. Even more importantly if your bowl bankroll has diminished in recent days then you must avoid using January 1st as a day of chasing your losses.
Bowling For Dollar$............
by Larry Trusley (Dec 21, 2006)
Back in 1972 when I arrived in Southern California from the streets of Akron, Ohio I remember watching a KTLA show hosted by Chick Hearn called Bowling for Dollars. I am sure I was drawn to the show because of my roots where on Saturday afternoons during the winter months in tire town the locals gathered around and watched the Chris Schenkel hosted Professional Bowlers Tour on national TV. Even more interesting is that I remember several local bookmakers posting odds to win on each of the five finalists.
Run Baby Run......
by Larry Trusley (Dec 14, 2006)
All week long I have thought about sending Tony Dungy an early Christmas gift, a copy of the 1960’s hit Run Baby Run by the Newbeats. His pre season Super Bowl favorites gained 34 yards on 19 carries versus the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday. That’s an anemic 1.79 yards per carry. On the other side of the ball the Colts got steam rolled for 375 yards on the ground on 42 carries or 8.93 per carry. These numbers would be scary enough if it were early in the season but with only three weeks left the Colts are definitely in trouble.
Revenge As A Handicapping Factor......
by Larry Trusley (Dec 8, 2006)
Webster defines revenge as an act or instance of retaliating in order to get even. Two events this past week made me choose revenge as this week’s subject for A Bettor Approach.
Which Stat Is Most Important?
by Larry Trusley (Nov 30, 2006)
At least a couple of times a year I get asked which NFL statistic I keep is the most important one? As I have mentioned many times before in this space turnovers and point differential rank right up there but this week I thought I would enlighten you about a more complicated number that might point you in the direction of a few more pro point spread winners.
Six Likely Candidates With Six Weeks To Play......
by Larry Trusley (Nov 22, 2006)
Every year at the ten games played mark I do a chart of the NFL teams with a record of 7-3 or better. Why 7-3? Well because over the past twenty NFL seasons the eventual Super Bowl winner has had a 7-3 record or better seventeen of those twenty years or 85% of the time.
Rolling Over My Tiger 401K......
by Larry Trusley (Nov 16, 2006)
Around high noon on Monday I pulled into Stateline Nevada with my 30 to 1 Tigers to win the pennant ticket in hand. I had last been there five and a half months earlier on my way to Kentucky Derby weekend in Las Vegas. I remember my astonishment that day when I saw Detroit listed at 30 to 1 to bring down the AL flag. That’s what makes playing the futures so much fun. Anymore it’s just about the only number that varies from sports book to sports book. The computer has taken away any chance of catching the odds makers asleep at the switch on any one individual game. That fact made this ticket cashing even more fun as the teller called out for authorization and the book manager came over looked at the ticket rolled his eyes and nodded his approval.
College Hoop Futures Offer Value As Well As Some Fun......
by Larry Trusley (Nov 8, 2006)
I know the BCS talk is heating up and football rivalry weekend is right around the corner but this is the time of the year when I start looking for value in the NCAA basketball futures in preparation for my November shopping trip to the Las Vegas desert. I love to take a shot at picking next April’s champion especially if I can get them at double-digit odds and besides it makes watching the early college hoops more fun and interesting.
Breeders Cup: Been There, Done That......
by Larry Trusley (Nov 3, 2006)
Saturday at Churchill Downs they will run the Breeders Cup races for the twenty-third time and probably more money than ever will be wagered on these four-legged creatures. Who really makes money when one of these steeds wins?
Trick Or Treat Or The NBA?
by Larry Trusley (Oct 26, 2006)
Next Tuesday night I will be faced with the annual delema of turning on the porch light and accepting the fact that the local beggars will interrupt opening night of the NBA. I can honestly say I’m not really excited about either event.
Is Betting The World Series Going To Be Déjà vu For This Patient?
by Larry Trusley (Oct 20, 2006)
I am sure most people awaiting the anesthesiologist’s needle don’t lay on the gurney replaying the 1968 World Series in their mind.
BCS Race Down To Nine......
by Larry Trusley (Oct 12, 2006)
The NCAA Football season is only six weeks old and we are already down to nine possible teams that will represent their conferences in the BCS Championship game in Glendale, Arizona next January. Yes, I know it’s possible for a team with one loss to participate in college’s final game but it’s not likely.
Do You Think George W. Is A Gambler?
by Larry Trusley (Oct 6, 2006)
If you are an online poker player or use the Internet to wager on sports you had better hope he is. Last week the Senate passed legislation in the wee hours of September 30th which is sure to shakeup the online wagering world. A world that had already been shaken by the arrests of Internet gambling executives Peter Dicks and David Carruthers.
Does 3-0 Punch Your Ticket To Miami?
by Larry Trusley (Sep 28, 2006)
Since 1990 teams going 3-0 have made the playoffs 76% of the time. Even more impressive is the fact that nine of the last sixteen (56%) eventual Super Bowl champions were perfect after three weeks. Armed with this information I like to draw up a chart of 3-0 teams every year at this time so as to analyze which ones are for real and which ones might have false hopes.
In The NFL The Cream Rises To The Top In A Hurry……Or Does It?
by Larry Trusley (Sep 21, 2006)
We are only two weeks into the 2006/2007 NFL season and already I am hearing the same commentators who picked Carolina and Indy to meet in Super Bowl XLI starting to hedge their bets. These same media folk are now singing the praises of the Chargers, Bengals and Ravens. Well it’s not quite that easy for us betting types because in our world a card laid is a card played.
Hang On To Your Day Job......
by Larry Trusley (Sep 14, 2006)
Several times a year I receive emails from individuals who believe they are ready to move to Vegas to make a living as a professional gambler. Some think they can do it playing poker while others think they will become rich betting on sports. My answer is ALWAYS the same......
Carolina Versus Indy In Super Bowl XLI......Or So They All Say
by Larry Trusley (Sep 7, 2006)
This week the airwaves and newspapers are filled with everyone’s predictions as to which two teams will be meeting in Miami next February. This morning I went to the ESPN website and a check of their top twelve pro football expert’s NFL selections showed that 9 of 12 (75%) prognosticators picked the Colts to represent the AFC in February and 8 of 12 (67%) picked the Panthers to do the same for the NFC.
I Am Thinking Defense When Playing the BCS Futures......
by Larry Trusley (Aug 31, 2006)
Since the 1997/1998 season the national champion has been determined by one final bowl game between the two top ranked teams or so we can hope. I’ve had some moderate success picking the eventual champion and I thought I would share with you this week my thoughts on this year’s field and how I attack this fun puzzle.
How Important is Strength of Schedule in Playing the NFL Futures?
by Larry Trusley (Aug 24, 2006)
We are two weeks away from the beginning of the 2006/2007 NFL schedule and it is the time of the year when I get asked several times a week for my picks for this year’s Super Bowl participants. Although I am proud of my past successes in sports handicapping it is always what have you done for me lately?
NFL Futures…..Who Do You Like?
by Larry Trusley (Aug 17, 2006)
I thought I would use this week’s newsletter to update you on some current odds as well as share with you some of the so-called-experts opinions. Let’s start with the latest numbers complements of my long time Vegas crony Jimmy the Geek.
Go Easy Early......
by Larry Trusley (Aug 10, 2006)
Yes, March Madness was fun and maybe the NBA Playoffs gave everyone a little rush but I still think football is the most fun and entertaining game to watch and wager on. The secret here is to not put yourself in a hole before the REAL games begin.
NFL Regular Season Wins: Overs and Unders......
by Larry Trusley (Aug 3, 2006)
My power rankings point me to three overs and one under. Let’s start with the team I think will most likely regress......
Looking For a BCS Nugget......
by Larry Trusley (Jul 27, 2006)
My scouts (really my older brother who lives in Columbus) tell me Chris Wells is the next Jimmy Brown which is enough to get me to pass on this one. There was and always will be only ONE Jimmy Brown!! This squad also faces a tough schedule without nine of their best tacklers from last year including their dynamic linebacker trio of Hawk, Carpenter and Schlegel. I would take the Bucks at 10/1 but not at half the price.
If You Heard It On ESPN Should You Bet On It?
by Larry Trusley (Jul 20, 2006)
Every year at this time I am amazed at how many hours of ESPN programming are dedicated to discussing the upcoming NFL season and their so called experts opinions as which teams are going to make the playoffs and more importantly which two teams are going to the Super Bowl. This year is no exception.
I Hope Mark Cuban Wins This Argument......
by Larry Trusley (Jul 13, 2006)
During March Madness Dallas Maverick owner Mark Cuban was quoted as saying sports betting should be legalized throughout the nation. Although I am not a big Cuban fan I believe this time he is right.
If It Were A Sprint Our Tigers Would Be Home Free......
by Larry Trusley (Jul 6, 2006)
Since I was a kid growing up in Ohio I have always looked at July 4th as the midway point of the Major League baseball season. I remember all those summers with my tribe trailing the Yankees by double digits and nothing to look forward to but the start of the NFL season some sixty days down the road. Well thank goodness those days are behind me and I reach the half way point with a lot of fun baseball to look forward to.
Home Cooking………You Can’t Beat It
by Larry Trusley (Jun 29, 2006)
I don’t care where you are betting on baseball if you are picking winners 67% of the time you are winning. Let me save you some time and tell you that during the month of July there are two MLB teams scheduled to spend an equal amount of time on the road.
The Cup Runneth Over...... Just Not In America......
by Larry Trusley (Jun 22, 2006)
All over the world pubs and bars are packed with rabid soccer fans screaming allegiance for their home country soccer team as the World Cup nears the end of round one and sixteen teams will come one step closer to claiming the world championship and bragging rights until 2010. One of those teams is NOT from the good old USA.
Steroids And/Or Two Losses And You Are Out......
by Larry Trusley (Jun 15, 2006)
Since 1950 the College World Series has been held in Omaha, Nebraska and since 1986 (though not continuously) they have tested participants for steroids and masking agents. Therefore we can rest assured that the players are clean... or on second thought can we after Mr Grimsley’s recent revelations?
Will There Be A Triple Crown of B’s ?
by Larry Trusley (Jun 8, 2006)
When the twelve hopeful colts enter the starting gate back in New York this coming Saturday many bettors will be wagering on a “B” Triple Crown sweep. The public will be plowing down on the pre-race favorite Bluegrass Cat (3/1) and the Baffert trained third choice Bob and John (5/1). If either emerges the victor then we will have a sweep of the Triple Crown classics by horses starting with the letter B.
Hey Bud, Oh Say Can You See, What The Rocket’s LATE Re-launch Means?
by Larry Trusley (Jun 1, 2006)
When I agreed to write this weekly newsletter nearly three years ago I chose the name “A Bettor Approach” because I wanted it to be a look at the world of sports through the eyes of a bettor. I wanted no part of the political side of sports nor did I want to cover the jurisprudence of the athletes involved.
What If The Game You Bet On Is Fixed?
by Larry Trusley (May 25, 2006)
I have been watching and wagering on sporting events for over forty years and have been on both sides of a lot of exciting gut wrenching finishes. I’ve been around for The Catch, The Drive, The Fumble and more last minute buzzer beaters and ninth inning homeruns than I care to remember. After many of these late game heroics I am often asked “Do you think the fix was on?”
Make Sure You Bet A Preakness Horse That............
by Larry Trusley (May 18, 2006)
........Ran in the Kentucky Derby because only one of the last ninety-two “new Shooters” won and only thirteen more (14%) hit the board.
Time To Dust Off My Magnum PI Baseball Cap……
by Larry Trusley (May 11, 2006)
For those of you following this newsletter over the last three years you will remember I always go to Vegas on Derby weekend and wager on my selections to win the AL and NL pennants. My picks are based on the statistical chart that I do on all the teams every April 30th. This is the same chart that pointed me to the Chicago White Sox last year at 6 to 1. You may also remember that I begin my analysis my throwing out the repeater and the favorite.
Post Position DOES Matter……
by Larry Trusley (May 4, 2006)
They drew post-positions this past Wednesday for the 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby. To many it is an unimportant televised event but to this handicapper it DOES matter.
The KEY To Betting Derby #132...
by Larry Trusley (Apr 27, 2006)
The lure of giant exotic payoffs in the Derby pools brings out many a novice horse player. The point of this week’s newsletter is to tell you about an intelligent strategy that might just put those exotic payoffs within your reach. A strategy that less than one in ten handicappers knows how to take advantage of.
Learning To Walk Away Is Not An Easy Thing To Do.........
by Larry Trusley (Apr 20, 2006)
I got an email this week from a subscriber asking me at what price should he bet the Pistons to win the NBA Championship. My answer to that question is simple.
Looking Back Into the Future(s)………..
by Larry Trusley (Apr 12, 2006)
This is the time of the year when many people who never think about horse racing start making their selections for the Kentucky Derby. Some of these uneducated fans may have even thrown away their hard earned money last weekend in what is called Derby Future Pool 3.
Can $195 Million Buy George 97.5 Wins? A Pennant? A World Championship?
by Larry Trusley (Apr 7, 2006)
The $195 million represents Mr Steinbrenner’s 2006 Yankee payroll and the 97.5 represents the projected number of Bronx Bomber wins posted in Las Vegas at the beginning of the season. That computes out to $2 million a victory.
A Look Back, Forward and UNDER…
by Larry Trusley (Mar 30, 2006)
I personally am not as surprised at the odds for George Mason as I am for the LSU Bayou Tigers. How could this team be 75 to 1 at the beginning of the tourney?
After Only Two Dances Who is the Belle of the Ball?
by Larry Trusley (Mar 23, 2006)
Although I don’t remember attending ANY of my high school dances I do recall my more suave debonair friends grading the girls after each of those social gatherings.
A Little Higher Education at Stateline
by Larry Trusley (Mar 16, 2006)
My son can tell you he can never remember me getting upset at a game or jumping up and down over a last minute victory. He said it best “What happened yesterday is just that and learn from it and move on”.
Slick Willy 2 to 1 to be First Mady…….
by Larry Trusley (Mar 9, 2006)
In Cabo San Lucas you can wager that Hillary Clinton will become the first woman elected US President in 2008. That would make her husband slick Willy the first Mady in history.
A Serious Case of the Withdrawals
by Larry Trusley (Mar 2, 2006)
This week’s newsletter was supposed to have the title “Betting the World Baseball Classic on the Mexican Riviera” but that was just wishful thinking. The truth is that there is NO wagering on the first annual classic within a hundred miles of where I am right now.
An Early Look Into My M&M Crystal Ball……
by Larry Trusley (Feb 23, 2006)
In a little under three weeks the BEST three weeks of sports will begin. The NCAA would like everyone to believe that the huge popularity of this event is because we all like to get together in Las Vegas and in sports bars across America to root our alma maters on.
Can Anybody Beat the Pistons?
by Larry Trusley (Feb 16, 2006)
I did not write this week’s newsletter to damper your spirits but to merely remind you that with sports it is never over until it is over.
Stevie Wonderboy Wasn’t Going To Win Anyway………………………..
by Larry Trusley (Feb 9, 2006)
Anybody who was crazy enough to bet the early Derby favorite at 8 to 1 in KD Future Pool #1 can now destroy their ticket(s). I never liked him anyway.
It will be Pittsburgh in 3D On Sunday
………Dick’s Defense in Detroit
by Larry Trusley (Feb 2, 2006)
Much has been said about Steeler running back Jerome Bettis’ homecoming this week but I believe the return of former Detroit Lion cornerback Dick LeBeau will prove to be more signifigant.
Internet Gamblers BEWARE......
by Larry Trusley (Jan 26, 2006)
Rarely a week goes by without someone emailing me for my recommendation on a cyberspace sports book. My answer is always the same “it’s against the law to wager on sports via the Internet”.
Vegas Buried Under Paper Avalanche......
by Larry Trusley (Jan 19, 2006)
Think about all those Indy backers who laid those 10 points against the Steelers and how about all those people holding future tickets on the Colts to win the Super Bowl at 9 to 5 or less.
And Then There Were Eight.....
by Larry Trusley (Jan 12, 2006)
Well we are down to eight teams and seven games left in the 2005/2006 football season. Can March Madness be very far away?
The Wild Weekend Ahead......
by Larry Trusley (Jan 5, 2006)
It will be very difficult for the NFL Wild Card contests to match the excitement generated by the last two bowl games. Both Penn State vs Florida State and USC vs Texas were easily two of the best college games I have ever seen.
Another Bowl Angle: Yard Ratios
by Larry Trusley (Dec 29, 2005)
Last week I shared with you turnover ratios which is one of the many factors I consider when evaluating bowl opponents. Bowl games are unique in that there is rarely any history or common opponents and evaluating teams can be like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
Turnovers in the Bowl Games………
by Larry Trusley (Dec 22, 2005)
You have heard me talk about how important turnovers are in the NFL and the same is true in the college bowl games. At this writing there have already been two games played and both were won by the teams with the better turnover ratio.
The Bowl Season is Unique……………
by Larry Trusley (Dec 15, 2005)
Next Tuesday night the first of twenty-eight college bowl games will take place in Lafayette, Louisiana. The bookies, Vegas sports books and offshore betting sites love this time of year because it is the pigskin version of March Madness.
Any Reason to Pick Against the Colts Going to Motown?
by Larry Trusley (Dec 8, 2005)
Yes, only one. The odds. On my recent trip to Sin City the best odds I could find on them to win the AFC were –200.
Who Will Represent the NFC in Detroit?
by Larry Trusley (Dec 2, 2005)
On my recent trip to Las Vegas I heard a lot of chit-chat amongst sports book patrons as to who will be in Detroit next February. I thought I would share my opinion this week as well give you the updated odds on each contender.
Shopping Until You Drop..In Las Vegas
by Larry Trusley (Nov 23, 2005)
Last weekend I took my annual Pre Christmas shopping trip to Las Vegas so I thought I would share my observations from that journey in this week’s newsletter. My main objective of this trip is to make my futures wager for the NBA but there are always other reasons to be there. This time I stopped at Stateline to place a wager on Fresno State versus #1 USC.
Overlapping Seasons Make College Hoops a Low Priority......
by Larry Trusley (Nov 17, 2005)
College basketball on the other hand has approximately 230 teams that are regularly offered on the betting menu. Each of these teams will play approximately 30 games so therefore there are 6,900 or so betting chances far outdistancing every other sport.
More Talk About TO……………………
by Larry Trusley (Nov 10, 2005)
Every individual who bets his hard earned money on NFL games should make himself very familiar with a much more important TO……TURNOVERS!!
No Bad Attire is Underway………
by Larry Trusley (Nov 3, 2005)
The NBA tipped off this week with an amusing new dress code in place for the players and I for one could care less what they wear.
Let’$ Keep It $imple on $aturday………
by Larry Trusley (Oct 27, 2005)
Tomorrow for the 22nd time horse racing will be holding their world championship at Belmont Park in New York. Where else can someone parlay an eight dollar ticket into more than $2.7 million as did one Rapid City, South Dakota resident back in 2003.
What Do We Do Now?
by Larry Trusley (Oct 21, 2005)
They came within one out of doubling my winnings when the Met’s Mookie Wilson slapped a full count pitch down the first base line and I painfully watched the grounder and my summer winnings go through Buckner’s legs. A day of rain and then game 7 sealed my fate.
Betting the Totals.....
by Larry Trusley (Oct 13, 2005)
Every weekend lines are posted on all the NFL games which represent how many total points will be scored in these contests. The public is given the option of taking the over(s) or the under(s). Many gamblers claim this is a much more lucrative way of betting on these games but I have yet to meet a professional punter who makes his living betting the totals.
Undefeated and on Their Way to the Motor City...
by Larry Trusley (Oct 6, 2005)
The shocking part is that since 1990, 9 of 15 (60%) eventual Super Bowl winners went 3-0 as well.
The Marlins are Gone and the White Sox at 8 to 1 are No Bargain……
by Larry Trusley (Sep 30, 2005)
Next Tuesday the REAL Major League Baseball season begins and of this writing there are still five teams in each league fighting for four playoff spots. I thought this week might be a good one to show you several of my post- season charts in preparation for next week’s playoffs.
Saks and Turnovers Make the Difference
by Larry Trusley (Sep 24, 2005)
I know it is early but I have always believed saks and turnovers are keys to success in the NFL. To win championships you have to make fewer mistakes than your opponents and control the line of scrimmage.
SUPER BOWL FORTY ? VERSUS ?
by Larry Trusley (Sep 14, 2005)
Every year in early August members of the media, former players and some celebrities begin making their predictions. I thought this week I would use the newsletter to put all of these prognostications in one place so come late January we can all look back and see who was right.
Let’s Bet for and on the Bayou……
by Larry Trusley (Sep 9, 2005)
Well since insurance sales doesn’t really appeal to me and I have been trying all week to think of away to help the victims of Katrina I accepted his challenge.
Who Survived the Dog Days of Summer?
by Larry Trusley (Sep 1, 2005)
The bad news is that the stats say my futures tickets on the Marlins and White Sox to win their respective pennants are is serious trouble.
Football Handicapping Contests……….A True Barometer?
by Larry Trusley (Aug 25, 2005)
A local Mercedes dealership will award a FREE one-year lease on an ML350 if the champion exceeds 67% winners. That sounds generous enough except there is no threat of them having to pony up. It simply will not happen!!
Early Money Versus Late Money………
by Larry Trusley (Aug 18, 2005)
Every Super Bowl week the media pays attention to the “number” probably more than at any other time of the year. They often quote Las Vegas sports book managers who talk about the line movement and which team they believe the “late money” will come in on. Is this reality or just a bunch of jiberish?
Biz is Booming at the Three Peat Café.....
by Larry Trusley (Aug 11, 2005)
Well I definitely have been blessed with a vivid imagination which probably explains why I have wild dreams on a regular basis. Just the other night I had a very amusing one that I thought I would share with you.
Go Light on the Pre-Seasoning……………
by Larry Trusley (Aug 5, 2005)
If you are going to be one of these weekend pundits my advice to you is go easy and I mean REAL easy on the Pre-seasoning!! I thought I would use this week’s newsletter to share some of my thoughts on how to approach the coming month of exhibition football.
Unrealistic Expectations…...
by Larry Trusley (Jul 28, 2005)
Many of the 40 million Americans who regularly wager on sports will begin a six- month journey that will see them wager millions of dollars on both college and NFL games. By next Super Bowl Sunday less than 1% of them will be on the plus side of the ledger. Most of them burned to the ground by unrealistic expectations.
A Late Train, a Little Rain, and a Lot of Rude Behavior......
by Larry Trusley (Jul 21, 2005)
By now the clouds had rolled in and for awhile it was more like being at Hialeah than Del Mar with high humidity and drops of rain. I really don’t think half of the 40,000 plus in attendance even noticed.
The Wiz’s Preseason Top 10 BCS Teams
by Larry Trusley (Jul 15, 2005)
Ah yes 80 to 1!!! I made some money on this team last year and at times I thought they looked awesome!! Their chances boil down to two November games.
Will the Nationals Surprise Continue?
by Larry Trusley (Jul 8, 2005)
I consider July 4th the halfway point of the Major League Baseball season and I always use that day to update my charts and reevaluate every team.
Which NFL Teams Got Better?
by Larry Trusley (Jun 30, 2005)
Every team has changed since last year’s regular season ended and picking out the ones who improved their roster enough to compete for Super Bowl XL is a challenging one but if you do your homework it can also be profitable.
Interleague Play-Advantage: American League?
by Larry Trusley (Jun 23, 2005)
This weekend will mark the end of interleague play for the 2005 Major League Baseball season. Back in 2000 I began tracking whether the American League perhaps has an advantage in these games because of the fact games played in AL parks use the designated hitter rule.
Time for a Little June Madness………………
by Larry Trusley (Jun 16, 2005)
Though it hasn’t reached the popularity of March Madness personally I will be just as interested on Friday morning when the first pitch of the 59th College World Series is thrown out.
Has the Price of Lemonade Gotten Too High?
by Larry Trusley (Jun 9, 2005)
There are several things that one cannot be if one wishes to be a professional sports handicapper and near the top of the list is SENTIMENTAL.
#XL………….Only a Few Months Away
by Larry Trusley (Jun 3, 2005)
I can’t believe there have been thirty-nine Super Bowls already and number forty will be here before you know it. It’s never too early to start thinking about future wagering on this event so on my latest trip to Las Vegas I gathered odds to win Super Bowl XL next February 5th.
Are You Ready for Some Football?
by Larry Trusley (May 26, 2005)
This fish prefers to swim in different waters so let’s take a look at the early numbers for NFL over/under season win totals as well as the numbers you have to wager to go either way.
Let’s Tri and Pick Some Black-eyed Susans…...
by Larry Trusley (May 19, 2005)
The Black-eyed Susan sure sounds more appetizing than a Mint Julip but I think I’ll pass on the beverages and go for the TRI (FECTA) in this Saturday’s Preakness Stakes in Baltimore.
Shopping ‘til you Drop…………… in Las Vegas…...
by Larry Trusley (May 13, 2005)
The city that never sleeps turns 100 on Saturday and despite what some of my friends might tell you I was not present on May 15, 1905 at the land auction that created this sprawling metropolis.
This Year’s Derby Exacta is as Simple as A, B, Z...
by Larry Trusley (May 3, 2005)
It appears the 131st running of the Kentucky Derby is going to have a full field of twenty despite the defection of one of my longshots D. Wayne Lukas’s Consolidator. This year’s full field as well as internet and betting outlets all over the world feeding into the same betting pools means there’s a very good chance wagering records will once again be set on this year’s Derby.
Keeping the Price of Your Mint Juleps Down………..Derby Don’ts!!!!
by Larry Trusley (Apr 28, 2005)
A week from tomorrow twenty horses will load into the starting gate at Churchill Downs for the 131st running of the Kentucky Derby. Meanwhile in the infield and at parties across America people will be slugging down concoctions of sugar (2 cups), water, fresh mint, crushed ice and two ounces of Kentucky Bourbon called mint juleps.

by Larry Trusley (Apr 22, 2005)
Well the boys in Las Vegas seem to think so. The REAL NBA season begins Saturday and here are the latest odds on the sweet sixteen of professional basketball
The Streakiest Sport of All……………
by Larry Trusley (Apr 15, 2005)
There is no other sport that compares with baseball when it comes to streaks and the amount of information available to the betting public. Recognizing these streaks (both winning and losing) and using this multitude of statistics can make the spring and summer months quite profitable but it comes at a price.
Win, Place and Show….On Golf ?
by Larry Trusley (Apr 8, 2005)
The first thing I do when making ANY wager is to determine if the odds are fair? The Augusta course with it’s forty-four bunkers would seem less hazardous than the current rules under which one wagers on this historical event.
Resisting the Roids and Illinois…………
by Larry Trusley (Apr 1, 2005)
As a professional handicapper I have resisted the temptation to take steroids which would have made it possible for me to pick over 70% winners versus the spread and would have also enabled me to find at least one LOCK game per week.
Half of OUR Sweet Sixteen are Still Alive…

There have been plenty of upsets and a couple of double-digit seeds (NC State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee) have even made it to the second weekend of action. Remember 88% of the tournaments played since 1979 have been won by either a #1, #2, #3 or a #4 seed.

If They Use Milkshakes and Sponges... Does that make them Dual Qualifiers?
by Larry Trusley (Feb 17, 2005)
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if a heavy favorite is “sponged” and a nice longshot is “milkshaked” and you have knowledge of these events than perhaps you could turn such information into a big pay day at the races.
All the Hoopla is Over…or is it Just Starting?

Turnovers are………………HUGE!!!
by Larry Trusley (Oct 8, 2004)
If you have been around this game for very long you know that many a game has turned in your direction because of a timely turnover or two and conversely I am sure your heart has been broken many a time by YOUR team either fumbling or throwing an interception at a key point in the game.

Betting the Bounce......
by Larry Trusley (Aug 19, 2004)

by Larry Trusley (Aug 12, 2004)
Approximately three quarters of wagers on the NFL are based on the spread. Another 16% are bets based on totals. That means about 7% to 8% of all wagers that are placed on NFL games are done so on the moneyline...
It’s OK to be an Exhibitionist…
by Larry Trusley (Aug 5, 2004)
No, not the indecent exposure kind. An NFL Exhibitionist: One who plays the preseason games. Many players avoid these games like the plague because they haven’t taken the time to study the patterns developed over previous exhibition seasons. Believe me they are there and knowing when to play them can be profitable.

Where does The Number come from?
by Larry Trusley (Jul 8, 2004)
Most bettors really don’t give much thought as to why they are giving or taking the points let alone where the number they are betting on or against comes from. If you are going to be a winner at sports betting you had better start paying closer attention to THE NUMBER.
NTRA Pick 4…..Better then the Lottery....
by Larry Trusley (Jul 1, 2004)
But not by much. The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) has announced a televised national Pick 4 on five separate weekends this summer. June 12, July 3, August 14, September 19 and October 2nd. Those of you who know me well know what I think of the game of horse racing but whenever I get a chance to bet into a pool of a half million dollars or more I do get interested.

by Larry Trusley (May 27, 2004)
From the first of April through early October the first thing I think about between 5:00 AM and 5:30 AM every morning is putting the coffee on and retrieving the three daily newspapers from my driveway. The only break in this regiment comes in July when Major League Baseball takes it annual All Star Game break.

The Morning After...Super Bowl XXXVIII
by Larry Trusley (Feb 5, 2004)
I woke up Monday morning with my usual annual case of the blahs. No, not because I missed the latest revelation from the Jackson family. No, not because I incorrectly picked a Patriot blowout running my Super Bowl record to 10-4-2 since I went public with my selections.
Don't let a proposition ruin your Super Bowl XXXVIII
by Larry Trusley (Jan 29, 2004)

The problem gambler
by Larry Trusley (Jan 8, 2004)
This week I was being interviewed by a California sportswriter about the Pete Rose story. He asked the typical questions like how many problem gamblers are there in America? I usually have a very cavalier answer like “when is gambling a problem? when you are living in your car or just before that?” The truth is that 1% to 2% of gamblers reach the problem stage.

by Larry Trusley (Nov 14, 2003)
I just got back from a two day stay at Lake Las Vegas and although it’s a beautiful place I don’t see how it’s going to survive if they don’t build more casinos. There is a small casino with six blackjack tables, one roulette wheel and one craps table and the bathroom in my suite seemed larger then the sports book there.
